The Guardian are reporting that there has been a record increase in university applicants from poorer backgrounds this year.
“The proportion of school-leavers from disadvantaged backgrounds applying in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland has increased to record levels.”
This is good news as the feedback I was getting was that the rhetoric from Labour and the NUS about ‘unaffordability’ was starting to put people off. In reality as no one pays for university up front (for the first time!) issues around affordability don’t factor.
In addition because of the changes in the way it is repaid you could describe the new system as a time limited graduate tax. This is something even the University of Westminster are reminding their students.
